If you've been following trends in the iPad world, you're probably already aware of the rapid uptake of mobile devices in the consumer marketplace. Indeed, the numbers are staggering: According to industry tracker iSuppli, Apple will ship nearly 44 million iPads this year, up from a "mere" 14 million in 2010. Projections for 2012 call for well over 60 million units to ship, and that's just for Apple products -- Motorola and other manufacturers are also making significant inroads into this space.
But it's not just consumers using these devices. Apple says the iPad has already been tested or deployed at 80% of Fortune 100 companies, a trend that suggests there is quite a market for developing and delivering business apps to mobile devices. So with that in mind, we're excited to announce that the upcoming Valence 3.0 includes Sencha Touch and special Touch-based portal features so IBM i developers can also capitalize on this emerging audience.
Sencha Touch (http://www.sencha.com/products/touch/) is the hot new HTML5-based framework for developing applications with a native feel. Currently geared toward mobile devices like iPads, iPhones and various Android-based smartphones, Sencha Touch will soon support Blackberry 6 devices as well, thereby representing well over 95% of current US mobile traffic. Valence Touch, to be included as part of Valence 3.0 in May, seamlessly integrates Sencha Touch with the Valence Portal and uses the same back-end Valence RPG procedures that service the standard Ext JS-based desktop framework.
The Valence 3.0 Portal auto-detects when users are logging in on a mobile device and automatically renders the navigation tree in a native Touch-friendly format. The portal then allows users to launch either standard Ext JS-based applications or Touch-based apps. This means your users get a "best of both worlds" interface - they can continue connect to their regular Valence apps on an iPad as well as use iPad-optimized apps as you develop them. Accessing IBM i on the go has never been easier!
Valence 3.0 will be formally announced at the COMMON (http://www.common.org/index.php/annualmeeting.html) Expo in Minneapolis on May 2.
